Creating A Healthy Aurora!
The Aurora Residents for Recreation (ARR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving Aurora through assessing and addressing the recreational needs of the city.
Aurora is Colorado’s third largest city with a population of over 325,000 residents and we have only one recreation center to serve the entire city.
The ARR has been engaging residents in a dialog around what facilities are needed and in what locations they would best serve community needs. The sites and facilities that were proposed in November of 2011 are described below.
North Regional Community Recreation Center
The proposed site for the North Regional Community Recreation Center is at Bicentennial Park (corner of Potomac and Alameda, just off I-225), an ideal location that will be accessible to many Aurora residents.
The design developed by residents includes:
Central Regional Community Recreation Center
The proposed site for the Central Region Community Recreation Center is at S. Telluride St. and E. Vassar Pl., just off Tower Rd., north of Hampden Ave.
The design developed by residents includes:
South Regional Community Recreation Center
The proposed site for the South Region Community Recreation Center is at the Aurora Reservoir community park.
The proposed design includes:
Moorhead Neighborhood Center Renovation
Located at 2390 Havana St. (map), the Moorhead Recreation Center has experienced significant growth in use by the northwest Aurora neighborhood.
The design that residents created is economical, it utilizes existing building space as well as pool infrastructure. It is also spacious at 30,000 square feet, a big improvement over the existing 4,200 square feet. The design adds:
Although this center will add amenities that can be used by residents of all ages, it also continues the teen component to allow youth free access to a safe place where they can stay active.
